Sitting Room

What images and associations do we bring to objects? How do our emotions. thoughts and memories alter our relationship and understanding of places and things? This one-week workshop challenged students to consider these questions and experiment with technique and representation. Working with light-sensitive blueprint paper, participants wrapped discarded furniture and other commonplace personal objects with shadow images that brought their own personal associations to the surface. These individual explorations were arranged to create a "sitting room" defined with artifacts whose invisible meanings beyond their apparent use suggested past and future gatherings. The project engaged in a conceptual reversal-everyday objects were transformed into abstract negative images on the blueprint paper, which then became the surface of the installation.
